A camera that never made it back to the shelf sits in an odd spot. Staff can’t check it back in, but they can’t close the record either. It lingers in reports as neither active nor gone. 

That kind of gap is common across lost laptops, retired projectors, and items still on order. Anyone running an equipment program knows it. Speaking to that gap directly, Lee, WebCheckout’s head of product, opened the segment with a clear caveat. Discussing future releases before the work is done carries real risk, he said. In practice, WebCheckout’s product team is developing several capabilities spanning equipment lifecycle planning, financial reporting, and mobile access. Some carry a planned target of December 2026. WebCheckout hasn’t confirmed these features yet, so treat the scope below as direction, not a commitment. 

What’s Inside This Resource Management Roadmap Preview?

Digging in, several threads make up this preview. Together, they sketch how WebCheckout wants to track equipment from arrival to retirement, covering lifecycle status, replacement forecasting, lost-item handling, reporting, mobile access, and bundles feature improvements. 

A Full Resource Lifecycle, From Pre-Service to Out-of-Service 

Beyond that, WebCheckout is planning two new lifecycle phases. A “pre-service” stage would cover equipment on order, at the loading dock, or undergoing commissioning. An “out-of-service” stage would cover retired gear alongside lost or stolen gear. Both phases would keep equipment linked to its history and checkout center, so daily operations views stay seamless. 

Replacement and Depreciation Planning 

Similarly, WebCheckout is planning improved replacement forecasting. A configurable usable lifespan per equipment type, the years an item should stay in service, would project a replacement date for each item. This equipment lifecycle planning software feature matters given capital-budget pressure. 

On that point, Gordian’s State of Facilities in Higher Education report found that deferred capital renewal needs at North American colleges and universities climbed to $156 per gross square foot, an 8% year-over-year increase, as School Construction News reported in April 2026. WebCheckout is also planning an optional depreciation calculation, an estimate of an asset’s declining value over time, though it has said this would supplement, not replace, an institution’s general ledger. 

A Two-Step Process for Lost and Stolen Items 

Meanwhile, the lost/stolen item workflow speaks directly to that opening camera example. A planned first step marks an item “reported lost” and notifies the patron. If configured, it also shows an anticipated replacement charge. A second “closing out” step then generates the invoice, letting staff resolve the allocation without a formal return. 

Reporting, Mobile Apps, and Smarter Bundles 

On top of that, new reporting capabilities are still taking shape through a collaborative partnership with customer input. Planned coverage spans cross-checkout-center utilization, demand-over-time reporting, barcode-coverage and random-sample audit tools, and asset lifecycle reports linked to the work above. 

Alongside that, WebCheckout is planning native iOS and Android apps built on the same interface as the redesigned Patron Portal, WebCheckout’s self-service checkout portal, supporting a mobile-first direction. Bundle improvements round this out: tracking demand and tying bundles to groups or courses so Patron Portal could suggest a bundle to a student automatically. 

How Much Should You Rely on This Resource Management Roadmap Preview Right Now?

Even so, treat it as direction, not a delivery date. Lee was explicit that WebCheckout has firmly planned some pieces for December 2026. Others could land later. Use this preview for planning conversations rather than budget commitments.
